Dr. John Carl Hoefs Sexual Assault
At Least Two Patients Are Filing Charges Against Dr. John Carl Hoefs.
Women shouldn’t have to worry about being sexually assaulted when they’re dealing with a life-threatening illness, but Dr. John Carl Hoefs is a 79-year-old hepatologist (liver disease specialist) in Orange County, CA, who forgot about decorum. He was arrested May 3, 2024, and charged with 7 counts of felony sexual battery for groping the breasts of at least two patients.1
Hoefs is affiliated with the Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian Medical Center and has also been affiliated with the University of California, Irvine, and the Liver Specialty Center in Irvine. His medical license, obtained 50 years ago, has not been revoked, which leads authorities to believe there may be more survivors.

What Are the Charges?
Hoefs is suspected of assaulting one female patient who suffered from a liver condition five different times during visits for treatment beginning in 2020, according to DA Spitzer’s office.

During the assaults, he allegedly grabbed the woman’s exposed breasts and removed the gown when the patient tried to cover herself. Another woman was groped in 2016 and 2017, authorities said. Hoefs faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted on all 7 counts.
